The 1978 International Art Exhibition for Palestine in Beirut was meant to lay the foundations of a “museum in exile” for the Palestinian people, built on the relations between artists’ organizations, networks of solidarity, and artist-donated collections.
Kristine Khouri and Rasha Salti (writers, researchers, and curators, Beirut) discuss how the predicament of exile changes the conception of what a museum and its canon might be. Departing from the transnational network, which the exhibition bears witness Claudia Zaldívar (art historian and Director of the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, Santiago de Chile) examines the alternative museology developed from 1971 on—that would finally become the International Resistance Museum for Salvador Allende in exile—and how it served as a model for the Palestine solidarity exhibition and the anti-imperialist international solidarity movement of the 1970s.
