At the Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH (KBB), the position of

Director of Haus der Kulturen der Welt

is to be filled by January 1, 2023. The KBB is a group consisting of the Berliner Festspiele with Gropius Bau, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and the Berlin International Film Festival. With different focal points, these institutions have set themselves the goal of organizing internationally outstanding cultural events in Berlin or bringing them to the city, looking for new ways and forms of cultural dialogue and discourse, and promoting international cultural exchange. The director of HKW is also managing director of KBB GmbH. The company has four managing directors, one for each institution, with equal rights as well as a joint commercial director. They are jointly responsible for overall management in accordance with the law, the articles of association, the business directive and the resolutions of the shareholders’ meeting and supervisory board. HKW’s mission is to reflect on global transformation processes and topics of international relevance – also with regard to German and European culture and society – using the means of art and science. For this purpose, HKW implements artistic events in a variety of cultural sectors. HKW works closely with national and international art and educational institutions as well as with the institutions of foreign cultural policy.

On the basis of previous experience, the applicant should be able to lead HKW and its 90 employees responsibly and creatively, to represent it convincingly in public, to work constructively with diverse partners and to continue to position and strategically develop HKW in Berlin, nationwide and internationally in an outstanding way as a place for debate and events. Both content-related stimuli and the ability to convey HKW’s topics and programs to a broad audience are expected. To fill the advertised position, we are looking for an applicant who meets the following requirements:

• An academic university education in a field suitable for the job
• Several years of professional experience in curatorial work
• Knowledge of personnel management, preferably through work experience
• Experience abroad, if possible during professional career
• Business fluent language skills at least in German and English.

The following are also desirable:

• Good national and international network of cultural and academic institutions
• Experience in the areas of international and interdisciplinary cultural work
• Experience in working with committees
• Experience in the field of third-party funding
• Knowledge of budgeting
• More foreign language skills

The position is generally limited to five years with an extension option. The pay is based on salary group B 3 of the Federal Salary Act (Bundesbesoldungsgesetz).
