“Haus der Kulturen der Welt is one-of-a-kind and indispensable. In its exhibitions, debates and performances it demonstrates a surprising, cosmopolitan view, asking again and again how diverse perspectives are refracted and reflected in Germany and Berlin.”
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Beck, Sociologist (Munich, London, Paris)
Funding for Haus der Kulturen der Welt comes from the German Federal Government. Since 1994 the Circle of Friends has provided HKW with additional financial backing, as well as impulses for our program and our communications, making possible such important special projects as the publication of artist’s editions, expanded cultural education offerings like guided tours and outreach programs for children and youth, and much more. For example, the Circle of Friends helped realize the web-based artist database culturebase.net – launched in 2003 in cooperation with international cultural institutions – and took the initiative in the restoration of Henry Moore’s “Butterfly” sculpture.
Residing in an architectural landmark in the heart of Berlin, a city where decisions impacting the future of Europe are being made, Haus der Kulturen der Welt explores global issues of the twenty-first century by means of art and scholarship. The institution pursues a “rooted cosmopolitanism,” opening perspectives on new questions in a globalized world in which the local is inseparably interwoven with international developments. Since 1989, in a program cutting across genre boundaries, HKW has been a forum for dialogue among the most diverse international actors, and for the collaborative intellectual examination of aesthetic and social issues.
