Nachom-ia-Kumpasar / Let’s Dance to the Rhythm
D: Bardroy Barretto, India 2015, 158 min, English subtitles
Dazzling homage full of music and dance in honor of the Konkani stars of the 1960’s
At a Goan wedding the trumpet player Lawry discovers the charismatic singer Dona, who as lead vocalist soon breathes new life into his swing band in Mumbai. Punctuated by 20 newly-recorded Konkani hits, director Bardroy Barretto’s film debut fictionalizes the tragic love affair of Goan music legends Chris Perry and Lorna Cordeiro. With its upbeat, poppy and jazzy songs, the film pays homage to Goa’s unique musical legacy, which in the 1960s had a great influence on Indian film music.
