At Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), visitors to the bauhaus imaginista exhibition can follow the international histories of the Bauhaus and choose their own personal approaches from an accessible educational program.

To kick off the program, the art historian Mona Schieren will guide them through the exhibition, focusing on alternative forms of knowledge production at the Bauhaus. During a guided tour in sign and spoken language, the contents of the exhibition will be conveyed to deaf and hearing visitors. Afterwards, a duo of a sighted and a blind educator offer a tour of the exhibition that will appeal equally to blind and sighted guests. A DIY smartphone audio-guide encourages personal exploration. The first chapter is also suitable as an audio introduction for use at home and can be found via hkw.de/en/audioguide. A team of young art educators will be available for conversations and more information in the exhibition during the Long Night of Ideas.

From its founding the Bauhaus was interested in other forms of knowledge. For example, the materiality of things played an important role in the production of knowledge; in their lives together the artists learned from one another. How did the Bauhaus break up the hierarchy that placed academic knowledge over craft and non-rational knowledge? How did Amerindian artifacts and Mesoamerican textiles inspire Bauhaus immigrants? And how much of the Bauhaus legacy is found in what was created outside the curriculum, for example at parties? How does it continue to affect contemporary art?
Mona Schieren is an art historian and teaches the theory and history of art at Bremen University of the Arts.
