Folk songwriting and psychedelic tonal experiments, rumbling rhythms and gentle ambient sounds: in Mary Ocher’s uncompromising compositions it all doesn’t produce contradictions, but delightful sparks of friction. In 2017 her album The West Against the People she asked sociopolitical questions; now they drive her even more. In addition to a world tour, she recently finished recording a new LP.

For Monica Besser, every performance at HKW is a home game. It’s not just because she’s been a guest several times, but because the songwriter has been at home all over the world since her first musical successes: samba rhythms, echoes of the blues, chanson melodies – they all flow into the songs of the self-proclaimed “troubadour at the end of the Anthropocene” just as naturally as she alternates between Portuguese, Spanish and English. After a five-year pause, she’ll present her upcoming third album.
