Two families on the Mississippi River are affected by the Second World War: Jamie struggles from trauma after his combat deployment; Ronsel, whose family also farms the muddy delta, is troubled by the deep-seated racism of those around him who disregard the courage he demonstrated in the war. Tensions in their friendship escalate into disaster. Dee Rees’s multiple Oscar-nominated novel adaptation tells of friendship, hatred and the power of change.
