SIGNS OF THE CITY - METROPOLIS SPEAKING

Signs of the City – Metropolis Speaking is an exhibition on the urban world of signs of the European city. Since October 2007, teenagers and young people have explored the signs of their cities employing photography and new media. London: the centre of Europe’s biggest conurbation with its multicultural flair. Barcelona: currently the most prospering city in Western Europe, a pivot between Catalan and Spanish cultural distinctiveness. Berlin: a city that had to reinvent itself after the fall of the Wall in 1989. And Sofia: capital of one of the youngest members of the European Union, expanding the visual research towards Eastern Europe.

International artists from different disciplines accompanied the young people in their explorations. The results comprise photography, installations, animations and internet projects, which are exhibited in all four cities. Some are already available on the online platform www.citipix.net .

The event is organized by urban dialogues in cooperation with the House of World Cultures, Next Intercultural Projects, Hangar and Artibarri Barcelona, the Atelier of Free Associations and the House of Cinema Sofia as well as the Goethe Institute Bulgaria, Watermans London and the Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR) at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Signs of the City has been carried out with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, the Capital Cultural Fund Berlin, the Institute of Culture of the City of Barcelona, the British Council Berlin, the Spanish Embassy in Berlin, SONY and Koschwitz Berlin. It works in collaboration with the Goethe-Institutes in Sofia, Barcelona and London.
