In a career spanning more than thirty creative years, critics have labeled the guitarist and singer-songwriter Howe Gelb with a range of attributes: “ground-breaking“, “rebellious and free as a bird”, “painfully melancholy“. The man from Tucson in the salt and limestone desert of Arizona describes himself as: “Endlessly restlessly, wanderlusted encrusted “.

Not only did he develop Desert Rock, that melancholy mixture of Alternative Rock, Folk and Country, and released 40 or 50 albums – he claims not to know the exact number – rather, in addition to Giant Sand, he has also formed a number of bands. However, Giant Sand is his most enduring formation, presumably because this band is more of a meeting point that continually attracts new guests. Long-standing band members included the Calexico co-founders, John Convertino and Joey Burns. For WASSERMUSIK 2011, the “Godfather of Desert Rock“ is bringing along Brian Lopez, Gabriel Sullivan and trumpeter Jon Villa (La Orkesta) from Tucson. There’s guitarist Brian Lopez, who has also put in brilliant performances as a singer in more gloomy-cum-psychedelic pieces. Equally dark is the Mexican-inspired Blues played by fellow guitarist Gabriel Sullivan. Alongside Howe Gelb, they perform a true Sonoran Desert revue.
