There are musicians who always wrest more from their equipment than the manufacturer recommends, who pry it open to coax out its circuitry’s secrets, rendering all warranties void. Or who first pull the bubble wrap out of the box to amuse themselves with its sound properties.

Using guitar, bass, homemade instruments, toys, and trash, Eli Gras fabricates “UnPop” somewhere in the space between ethnic music and free improvisation. Here, she will form a duo with Truna and his “Magic Suitcase.” In Fell, samples of everyday noises, bent by toktek into musical happenings, come up against Simon Berz’s drums and their homemade analog applications. Pierre Bastien’s sound machines combine the dynamics of a concert performance with sheer wonder at the workings of his sound-makers, which have been laid open with screwdriver and soldering iron. Frikstailers use Nintendo, Wii, and Guitar Hero controllers to send listeners on a sonic rollercoaster ride along bass-heavy, percussion-driven grooves, through epic breaks, and into technologically short-circuited cumbia.
