Célia Wa
Concert

At a young age Célia Wa began playing the Ka, a percussion instrument from the Antilles associated with the Gwo Ka music tradition from Guadalupe. She is also a dancer, flautist, singer, and composer who self-produced her first two albums Wa and Adan on dòt Sòley. With a fascination in what she calls ‘Karibfutursound’, Wa has developed a futuristic Caribbean approach that draws upon both collective memory and personal storytelling.

Nação Zumbi
Concert

The early 1990s in Pernambuco, Brazil was a period during which a range of staunchly neoliberal policies were implemented, aggravating social inequalities and racism. The manguebeat movement, of which the band Chico Science e Nação Zumbi were a part, emerged from this historical context. Manguebeat was a countercultural movement with its own manifesto, Caranguejo com Cérebro (Crabs with Brains), which proposed to revolutionize art and aesthetics, asserting music as resistance. Later known as just Nação Zumbi following the death of singer Chico Science, the band embraced the fight against enslavement through their music and social impact. With references ranging from the drums of the religious ritual of maracatu nação to the hip hop movement Universal Zulu Nation, Nação Zumbi’s compositions are considered some of the greatest works of manguebeat, reggae, and Brazilian rap.
