Citra Sasmita

Citra Sasmita is a Balinese artist whose practice focuses on dismantling the misconceptions of local art and culture in Bali. She is invested in questioning women’s place in society and seeks to upend normative constructs of gender. Sasmita engages with the Indonesian Kamasan painting technique, to reinvent epics of war and romance as a reclamation of female agency. A self-taught artist, Sasmita studied literature and physics at Udayana University and Ganesha University of Education. Her works have been shown at Toronto Biennale, 2024; 24th Biennale of Sydney, 2024; and Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, 2024; among others. Sasmita lives and works in Bali.
