Julia Oelkers works as a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker focusing on contemporary documentary films and web documentaries. Racism, displacement, and migration are recurring themes in her work. Together with Isabel Enzenbach, she conceived and realised two online projects on migrants in the GDR: Eigensinn im Bruderland, a web documentary about migrants in the GDR who asserted their own ideas, was awarded the Grimme Online Award in 2020. De-Zentralbild (shortlisted for the Digamus Award 2024) presents private photos and stories of migrants in the GDR in an online exhibition. Oelkers lives and works in Berlin.
