Kais al-Zubaidi is a filmmaker, director, editor, lecturer, film scholar, and author. He studied film editing and cinematography at the German Academy of Film Arts in Babelsberg. After studying in the GDR, he lived and worked alternately in Damascus, Beirut and Berlin. He created the first experimental feature film in Syria and is the first Arab filmmaker to win a main prize at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen for his film Hisar Muddad (Counter-Siege, 1978). He has published numerous books on the film craft and on Palestine in film. Al-Zubaidi lives and works in Berlin.
