Maria Auxiliadora (1935, Campo Belo, Minas Gerais, Brazil–1974, São Paulo, Brazil) was a painter whose mixed-media paintings depict scenes of daily life in São Paulo, in particular, the Afro-Brazilian religions Candomblé and Umbanda as well as orisha deities. In 1981, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) held Auxiliadora’s first large-scale museum exhibition. In 2018, after nearly forty years out of the public eye, Auxiliadora was featured in a new solo exhibition at MASP, Maria Auxiliadora: Daily Life, Painting and Resistance. Her work is held in museum collections such as: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Museu de Arte de São Paulo; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
