Massao Okinaka
Massao Okinaka (1913–2000) was a painter and Sumi-e teacher. He trained under Onishi Kakyo as a teenager in Kyoto and adopted oil painting in Brazil, to where he migrated with his family in 1932. He presented his painting in the first Bienal de São Paulo in 1951, and in salons like the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes, Salão Paulista de Arte Moderna, and Salão Seibi. Okinaka’s work has been exhibited in solo and group shows at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Museu de Arte de São Paulo, and Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo, as well as in cultural institutions in the United States, Japan, and Spain.
