Hiwa K was born in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan, Iraq, in 1975, before relocating to Germany at the age of 25, where he embarked upon his journey as a multidisciplinary artist. His artistic trajectory intertwines personal and biographical anecdotes with significant historical events and ongoing global challenges, including war, migration, and the enduring legacies of colonialism and neoliberalism. Drawing deeply from his own experience of migration and the affirmation of his Kurdish identity, this dialogue with the artist sheds light on the rich tapestry of aesthetics and historical contexts that have shaped his practice, both within and beyond the framework of German Democratic Republic’s history.

Complementing the conversation, the artist also involves elements of his performative musical practice and speaks about the complex history of flamenco music as a migratory genre.
