With self-determination at its core, mastering the art of presentation has been a catalyst for self-empowerment inside the practice of Ballroom culture. Using fashion as a vessel of self-expression and affirmation, in line with a long history of excelling in terms of creativity, style, and precision, the Ballroom community’s art reclaims space, demands acknowledgment, and puts forth a commitment to beauty and agency.
The series Pump, Create, Elevate is dedicated to the whole community, providing a space for gathering that is outside of the traditional dynamics of the balls. Offering a frame to practice and exchange on aspects of the culture, each session focuses on a different facet, such as preparing for the fashion categories, the basics of runway, or how to bring a non-binary gender approach, with invited guests guiding the programme. Centred around the Ballroom community and its members, this space also extends an invitation to others interested in expanding their knowledge, skills, or network. Additionally, there will be a library available in the space featuring publications that delve deeper into the culture, its history, and knowledge.
Runway 101 & Lab is a two-part practice session led by Legendary Mother Leo Saint Laurent and Nekia St. Laurent, both experienced facilitators, performers, and community organizers.
The session starts with a workshop open to all (including beginners and those without a background in dance), in which Mother Leo teaches the foundations of the category Runway, inspired by New York high fashion designers houses and the expressive walks of the 90s supermodel era. After a short introduction to All American Runway (masculine walk) and European Runway (feminine walk), the workshop focuses on the basic elements of the two categories, how to get ‘10s’ scores, and the concepts of a battle situation. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own accessories such as jackets or glasses, and high heels or sneakers are recommended foot attire.
The second part welcomes the Ballroom community and those already experienced in performance categories. A model, accomplished Fem Queen, trans and sex workers’ rights advocate, and activist, Nekia is renowned for her classic yet dynamic performance style. With her Zulu Cunt Clinic, she guides a practice to help unlock the mindset required to perform Vogue Fem. Originally known as Fem Queen Performance, the category takes as referential inspiration different forms of expression practised by trans women. In this session, Nekia offers strategies for performing the various elements of vogue, and finding movements that work for each participant and the persona they wish to bring to the floor.
