This sonic tribute led by artist Leila Bencharnia celebrates influential women who accompanied and nurtured Fela Kuti’s vision and work as a freedom fighter. The session spotlights key figures such as Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a prominent Pan-Africanist and anti-colonial feminist; Sandra Izsadore (Sandra Smith), a musician and social activist who was an active member of the Black Panthers; and the Kalakuta Queens, who were composers, performers, singers, spiritual guides, and healers. The listening session features vinyl records such as Coffin for Head of State (1981), Sorrow Tears and Blood (1977) and Expensive Shit (1975), highlighting the profound impact these women had upon him and the broader struggle for freedom and justice.
