Forgive Us Our Trespasses closing weekend
Lizza May David’s videos create multilayered archives of female experience, related to the struggles of migrant families, and in particular the experiences of women who have moved from the Philippines to work abroad. Through a cinematic language that emphasizes the ambiguous power of images, David’s work reveals the asymmetries that underpin female migrant labour. Departing from the situated knowledges embedded within her own biography, the artist connects multiple stories, perspectives, and generations, tackling politically the commodification of care practices. As author Yuanwen Zhong writes about David’s artistic method in the Forgive us our Trespasses Reader: ‘This form of knowledge production is partial, contextual, and intersectional’. During the screening a selection of videoworks by David are shown, followed by a conversation that gives further context to her practice and video work The Model Family Award (2008), which is included in the exhibition.
