Sounds Like Gibberish inquiries how overtone singing, known within the Xhosa people as umngqokolo—a polyphonic vocal technique employed principally by women—connects to cultural practices of spiritual possession (inkenqe) in deep healing ceremonies (intlombe). The session unfolds how compositional approaches to music in South Africa are intricately linked to concepts of collectivity and performed cultural rituals. In highlighting the communal dimensions of music-making, this listening session emphasizes how musical practices serve not only as individual expressions but also as vital reflections of cultural identity and shared experiences within the community.
