Wičháȟpi Wóihaŋbleya is a solo performance by Oglala Lakȟóta artist Kite, utilizing a custom computer interface that intertwines technology with Lakȟóta Visual Language to manipulate sound. In this version, Kite performs alone with computers, accompanied by recordings of the visual score for a small orchestral ensemble. The piece’s content is derived from images of dreams described by Kite and transcribed into the Lakȟóta Visual Language by Kite and her research team. This work is conceptually created by Lakȟóta women and two-spirit people who use this language to translate dreams into artworks. The score, a combination of through-composed parts and imagery, tells musicians how to embody this visual language live on stage. As part of this process, Kite invites musicians to improvise alongside her,  connecting and generating sounds that are mediated by Kite’s body interface. Machine Learning tools then allow Kite to use her own movements to train the software, allowing for a Lakȟóta data set to be simultaneously coded by a Lakȟóta body.
