The Afro-Brazilian filmmaker, actor, and activist Zózimo Bulbul directed this epic documentary film on the hundredth anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Basing the film on numerous interviews with the most important Black figures in Brazil’s political and cultural scenes, as well as extensive archival material, Bulbul provides a striking historical analysis of racial discrimination and a detailed insight into the power imbalance that still dominates the country. The film succeeds in presenting a unique reflection on the history of slavery from a Black perspective, which culminates in the critical question as to what the abolition of slavery means one century later. Bulbul was a prominent member of the Afro-Brazilian cultural scene, being, amongst other things, the founder of the Encontro de Cinema, a festival that shows films from Brazil, Africa, the Caribbean, and other Black diasporas and is still held annually in Rio de Janeiro.
