As part of Oscar Murillo’s interventions for the O Quilombismo exhibition, the Afro-Colombian music ensemble Mar, Río y Cordillera are stationed in different communal spaces in HKW creating daily moments of rehearsal, vibrational resonance, and convivial accommodation. At the start of their residency, the multi-generational group accompanies one of the music and dance workshops of the series Bullerengue: Planting the Seeds for Community Healing, and at the end they raise the spirits in joy, playing a concert at Bwa Kayiman—Congressing at the Heart of Liberation. Coming from different locations within the region of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, Mar, Río y Cordillera bring together an extended family of Afro-diasporic rhythms from all over the country. Such beats are embodied by the communities that use them to mark and celebrate important moments, manifesting the rhythms as expressions of their existence.
