As part of artist Oscar Murillo’s interventions for O Quilombismo, the Afro-Colombian music ensemble Mar, Río y Cordillera, are in residence for the first two weeks of August with daily moments of rehearsal, vibrational resonance, and convivial accommodation. Mar, Río y Cordillera conclude their time at HKW by raising the spirits in joy and playing a concert during the Bwa Kayiman—Congressing at the Heart of Liberation programme. Different generations of musicians from three different bands, carrying with them the culture of different regions within Colombia, bring together in their performance an extended family of Afro-diasporic rhythms from all over the country. Such beats are embodied by the communities that use them to mark and celebrate important moments—manifesting rhythms as expressions of their existence.
