The Destination: Tashkent festival celebrates the extraordinary history and cultural influence of the Tashkent Festival for Asian, African and Latin American Cinema, which was held for the first time in 1988 in Uzbekistan. The festival will be revived at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and other venues in Berlin and Tashkent.
The film and discourse festival will take place in Tashkent from 26 to 29 September 2024. The opening will take place on 26 September at 18:30 at the Goethe-Institut in Tashkent, including a film discussion with renowned filmmaker Ali Khamraev.
Inspired by the historical film festival, the festival will present a selection of films that were shown in the original programme, as well as contemporary works by filmmakers from Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The films will be shown either with live dubbing in English and Uzbek or with subtitles. The programme is organised by Can Sungu, curator for film practices at the HKW, and the Goethe-Institut Uzbekistan and in collaboration with local initiatives that curate the short film series.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will focus on panels, community events and workshops. International filmmakers, film critics and academics will discuss the historical significance of the festival and the perspectives of the younger generation of filmmakers.
From 20 September to 14 October 2024, an exhibition of archival material and artefacts at the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent will also bring the history of the festival to life.
Following a prologue in September taking place in Tashkent, the festival’s spirit is alive in Berlin at HKW and Sinema Transtopia between 27 November and 1 December 2024. Destination: Tashkent features a selection of films that demonstrates the diversity of the original festival’s programming, as well as contemporary films from Central Asia and the Berlin diaspora of three continents.
A discursive programme expands the conversations around the Tashkent Festival and its traces in contemporary film festivals, film production, and circulation.
A reader including texts and conversations expanding upon curatorial on-site research, archival finds, and new commissions is launched during the programme in Berlin.
