What is contemporary? Diagnosing the present 2015–2018

World Politics – Dream States – Data Streams: 100 Years of Now combines diagnoses of our times with scopes of action. In its latest long-term project, HKW examines the interrelations between global conflicts, classification systems and technologies.

Series of events and publication

The changes and disruptions of the past hundred years have shaped our conception of reality, our thought, and our language. The Dictionary of Now series reflects on the capacity of language to both depict and create reality. Since the modern age this has gone hand in hand with the search for universal truths and codified usages. The Dictionary of Now confronts this assertion of linguistic universalism with specific contemporary positions.

Research Project

The twentieth-century celebrated technology as a way to achieve planetary unity and control. Yet today technics, nature, and human activity seem to combine in increasingly disorienting, uncontrolled compositions in which once-reliable distinctions lose their stability. How did we end up in this world of technological vertigo, this Mobius strip of world and planetary technics, wherein cause and effect, local and global factors, human and non-human agency, perpetually confuse and confound one another’s borders?

Labour in a Single Shot

Exhibition, Conference, Workshops

Drawing on the Lumière brothers’ „Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory“ Antje Ehmann and Harun Farocki initiated workshops in 15 cities worldwide, in which short one-shot-videos on the topic of labor were produced. In this exhibition these films will be on show, displayed in associative clusters drawing fine lines in-between the single works. The accompanying conference (Feb 26–28) delves into the phenomenon of work and labor in all its multiple global extensions analyzing ways of filmic concentration and their discursive potentials. One day of commemoration is dedicated to Harun Farocki and his legacy.

“Mother India” revolves around the influences of the Indian diaspora, from Britain to the Caribbean: the fusion of the rhythms and harmonies of South Asia with Western electronic dance music to form Asian Underground, now firmly rooted in the London club scene; its decisive influence on styles such as taarab in East Africa; and the popular chutney music of Trinidad and Suriname, in which traditional Indian musical forms meld with calypso.

Lifelines #4: Roedelius

Working with groups such as Kluster and Harmonia, he became one of the central figures of “Krautrock” in the 1960s and 1970s and is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music. The fourth Lifelines festival is devoted to the personality and the artistic activities of Hans-Joachim Roedelius.

Since the mid-1990s, Argentinean films have regularly won laurels at international festivals, made their way into European art-house cinemas, and been taken up by academic symposia. From September 10 to 20, 2015, Haus der Kulturen der Welt is devoting an extensive program to the success story of “new Argentinean film.”

One hundred years after World War I the violent conflicts of our age have assumed completely new forms. When individual militias, warlords and terrorist groups, as opposed to states, become the decisive players, then in many cases wars can now no longer be recognized as such. However, even World War I, as a global war, was already a complex formation composed of diverse parties and partisans, paramilitaries and warmongering intellectuals.
